Beszélsz nyelveken? Vajon kinek mi a titka?

The Tortoise and the Eagle

The Tortoise and the Eagle

A tortoise became dissatisfied with his lowly life, when he saw so many birds enjoying themselves in the air. 'If I could only get up into the air, I could soar with the best of them, he thought.
One day an eagle came to rest on a rock beside him, and, seizing such a favorable opportunity, the tortoise offered all the treasures of the sea if only the monarch of the air would teach him to fly.
The eagle at first declined the task, for he considered it not only absurd but impossible, but, being further pressed by the entreaties and promises of the tortoise, he finally agreed to try.
Taking him to a great height in the air, he loosed his hold, bidding the stupid creature to fly if he could.
Before the tortoise could express a word of thanks he fell upon a huge rock and was dashed to pieces.

Try to find expression(s) in the text which mean:

• To be happy – ____________________
• Boring – ____________________
• ‘Died’ – ____________________
• Promising moment – ____________________
• King – ____________________
• Let it go – ____________________
• Living being – ____________________
• Not to accept – ____________________
• Showing gratitude – ____________________
• Sounds stupid and cannot be done – ____________________
• To fly - ____________________
• To relax, sleep, etc… - ____________________
• Very invaluable things – ____________________

The story of the Sandman_Part 4_The Sandman's house

Hűen a blog nevéhez. ;)

The Sandman’s house

"Now I'll describe the inside of the Sandman's house," Madame Holle continued, after she (1) ______ (will/had/would) provided us with fresh helpings of dumplings and wine. We were beginning to get a bit drowsy, and as soon as the sound of her voice filled that comfortable room our minds seemed to separate (2) ______ (from/to/into) our bodies and return to the castle up above.
"The Sandman always has a log fire burning in his parlor, summer and winter. There are easy chairs, little tables, chests, and an hourglass; a warming pan is hanging (3) ______ (onto/on/to) the wall. There is also a small donkey named Suzanne that lives in the room - the smallest donkey in the world. This is the mount that the Sandman rides (4) ______ (through/around/in) the world when he puts people and animals to sleep every night. She is happy to help him because she is very fond of the Sandman, (5) ______ (that/because/and) he is of her."
Madame Holle (6) ______ (must/should/had) have worked some kind of magic (7) ______ (to/on/with)us because everything she described began to happen in front of us, just as if we were actually there.
The Sandman (8) _______ (after/than/has) closed the door behind him, and scratching the donkey (9) _______ (behind/under/over) her ears, sits down in his chair. He picks up a thick book (10) _______ (for/have/with) a leather binding and says, "How (11) _______ (far/long/many) did we get before Ihad to go out? Oh yes, Sleeping Beauty had just pricked her finger on the spinning wheel and had fallen into a hundred-year sleep along with everyone else in the castle, (12) _______ (not/even/such) the animals. . ."

From slavery to freedom

Working with a partner, add the correct indentation, capitalization, and writing marks where necessary to the essay below.

frederick douglass an american hero

frederick douglass played an extraordinary role in american history he was born a slave in marylandin 1817 he never saw his brother and two sisters until he was seven years old he later wrote in this Narrative, Slavery made us strangers at 21, Douglass worked on the docks in Baltimore from there, he managed to escape from slavery using the identity papers of a free black sailor he then went to new york city where he married ann murray, a free black woman whom he had first met in baltimore. he chose a new name: douglass from sir walter scott's novel, The lady of the lake. in his new life, frederick douglass became an important abolitionist. he helped slaves escape to the north by means of the Underground Railroad. in 1847 he began to publish his own newspaper called The North Star this was the name of the star that escaping slaves followed north in search of freedom. Douglasss sons fought among the black troops douglass later became u.s. ambassador to haiti the world's first black republic. he also became a leader of howard university the first university for african americans in the united states frederick douglass is an american hero.

Fifty-six!

No kérem.

Nobody-nobody at all-will get through my barrier of snow and fog, not even the Keep-awakes!"
"Who are they?" we asked.
"They are the ones who try to keep people from sleeping. They are forever at work trying to undo what the Sandman (10) _____________, and they'd like nothing better than to cut him (11) ____________ from his supply of sand. But they'll never get past me. I'll tell you more about them later."

What time is it?

Henry James, quoted in Edith Wharton's A Backward Glance

Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.

Ezzel a kellemes gondolattal pályázom most el másfél hétre, az éves rendes pihenést kiveendő; de a nyelvészeti frigó feltöltve, mindenki csemegézzen kedvére, és kommenteljen bátran - hamarosan találkozunk! :DDD

BOB VISITS THE VILLAGE MARKET

Bob goes to the Village Market, a supermarket in town. He asks Carol, the owner of the store, if she would like to sell Susan's Scrumptious Cookies. Carol agrees, but isn't able to tell Bob how much she'll pay him.

Bob: Thank you for making time for me today, Carol.
Carol: Don't mention it, Bob. What's up?
Bob: My wife baked these cookies from scratch. Please take one.
Carol: Mmmm, chewy. These are out of this world!
Bob: My wife's a great cook.
Carol: You can say that again. I don't want to make a pig of myself, but let me take a few more.
Bob: Oink oink! Just kidding!
Carol: I'd like to sell these at the Village Market. My customers will go nuts over these!
Bob: How much would you pay us for each cookie?
Carol: I'm not sure. I need to roll up my sleeves and figure out the finances.
