Beszélsz nyelveken? Vajon kinek mi a titka?

The story of the Sandman_Part 6_Petronius

A kedvenc arcom az egész könyvből...

Petronius

There is one more creature in the Sandman's house. This is Petronius, the oldest and smallest owl (Athene nocturna) in the world. He sleeps (1) __________ the day. Roberta has not been able to get him house trained - he's far (2) __________ learned. Every day she simply lays a mat under him and beats it out later, muttering (3) ___________ herself.
At night, he flies silently through the corridors of the castle and catches black spiders and sometimes (4) ____________ a silly lost beetle. This is the only food that he likes. He can predict the weather, and he knows what time it is (5) ______________ in the world, even in the smallest village, which is harder than memorizing a complex railway timetable.
(6) ___________ the Sandman knows all about sleeping sand, Petronius knows every detail of what goes (7) ____________ in people's and animals' minds while they are asleep. He knows what sleep is, which is something no human (8) __________ has yet figured out. But Petronius won't give anything away. He (9) ______________ tell you a few well-known facts, such as "REM sleep (that is, sleep during which Rapid Eye Movements happen) occurs four times a night," or "The formatio reticularis is the cerebral cortex's main source of wakefulness." You feel sure that he must know all there is to know, but you must be content (10) ____________ whatever he chooses to discuss. If you ask too many questions he will simply close his eyes, and he won't open them again for hours.

BOB'S BIG COOKIE ORDER

The family is gathered around the dinner table. Bob tells them about his deal with the Village Market. He asks his kids for help baking the cookies.

Bob: I know I've been down in the dumps since I got fired, but things are looking up now. The Village Market wants to sell our cookies.
Nicole: That's great news, Dad!
Bob: We're going to have to bake like crazy over the weekend. They want 2,000 cookies by Monday.
Nicole: Two thousand cookies in three days? Don't you think you've bitten off more than you can chew?
Ted: Yeah, you're going to be running around like a chicken with its head cut off!
Susan: Fortunately, there are four of us here. You kids will have to pitch in too.
Nicole: Sorry, but I can't. I have to finish Ted's chemistry homework and then I've got to get going on my election speech.
Bob: What's that about doing Ted's chemistry homework?
Ted: Never mind! Amber will help out with the cookies instead of Nicole.
Susan: For heaven's sake, Nicole! It's like pulling teeth getting you to do any work around here.

IDIOMS - LESSON 12

(to) bite off more than one can chew - to take on more than one is capable of; to take on too much
EXAMPLE 1: Jennifer is having a dinner party for 50 people, and she can't even cook. I think she's bitten off more than she can chew.
EXAMPLE 2: You agreed to host 50 exchange students from Korea? Aren't you afraid you've bitten off more than you can chew?
SYNONYM: to be or to get in over one's head. Example: Jennifer is in over her head with this dinner party!

Good old Charlie Brown

“I'm living in London now.“
“My father isn't very well.“
“I'll tell Ann I saw your brother yesterday.“
“Sharon and Paul are getting married next month.“
“Margaret has had a baby.“
“I don't know what Fred is doing.“
“I saw Helen at a party in June and she seemed fine.“
“I'm not enjoying my job very much.“
“I haven't seen Diane recently.“
“You can come and stay at my flat if you are ever in London.“
“My car was stolen a few weeks ago.“
“I want to go on holiday but I can't afford it.“

Charlie, “I'll tell Ann I saw your brother yesterday.“

Snoopy, "Charlie told me (yesterday) (that) he would tell Ann he had seen/saw my brother the day before/two days ago/the other day/on Monday/etc."

Várom a kollégák véleményét. :D

Profound grammar statements

1. Avoid alliteration. Always.

2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

3. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They’re old hat.)

4. Employ the vernacular.

5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.

6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.

7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.

8. Contractions aren’t necessary.

9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.

10. One should never generalize.

11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.”

12. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.

13. Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous.

14. Be more or less specific.

15. Understatement is always best.

16. One-word sentences? Eliminate.

17. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

18. The passive voice is to be avoided.

19. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

20. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

21. Who needs rhetorical questions?

22. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

The word "antepenultimate" is stressed on the antepenultimate. (Itt)
