Beszélsz nyelveken? Vajon kinek mi a titka?

The story of the Sandman_Part 9_The Sandman's Exercises

THE SANDMANS EXERCISES

A régi motorosok már ismerik a feladattípust, sőt, Sandman kollégát is. Ha valakinek felhasználási kérdése van, írjon!

The Sandman is phenomenally good (1) _______ throwing sand into the eyes of living beings, and he hardly ever misses. But a skill like this, of course, (2) _________ to be maintained by regular daily exercises. Anyone who seriously plays a sport or a musical instrument knows how important practicing (3) __________. It is the only way you can keep up to snuff.
The method used by the Sandman to spread his sleeping sand is this: he takes a handful (4) __________ sand from the leather bag on his belt. As he passes a human or an animal, he deftly slips a few grains of sand from the palm of his hand into the bend of his index finger (usually in his right hand, but if large numbers of people or animals (5) _________ to be covered he can use both hands at the same time), puts his thumbnail under it, and flicks it in a neat arc straight into the eye at which he is aiming. To begin his exercises, the Sandman practices every day, throwing sand into bottles, pots, and jugs that sit on a curious old cabinet (an antique dealer (6) _________ pay a fortune for it!). But these are only warm-up exercises. After this he exercises blindfolded. He has a Silpha thoracia beetle that scratches the jug with (7) _________ tiny legs so that the Sandman can tell where it is. Then he flicks sand (8) _________ into the jug. Perhaps the most difficult part of his shooting exercises is (9) __________ a mirror. The amount of misfires here is about 2 percent, which is still extremely low. To be sure, the Sandman takes (10) ___________ more sand on his thumbnail. During these exercises he sometimes happens to get a single grain in his own eye. The only thing that happens is that he loses patience (11) _______________ the exercises.
When he has completed this (12) __________ his satisfaction, he goes on to an even more difficult test: bottles and pots slowly turning in a circle powered by Suzanne on a treadmill that resembles a (13) ____________ jogging machine. To make the task even harder, the Sandman does it again, but this (14) _____________ on one leg.
(15) ___________, Suzanne doesn't like this treadmill part-but since she is a good little donkey, she performs it well. Once in a while, to tease the Sandman, she starts running very fast. Then he has to flick his sand (16) _____________ a frantic pace, but he doesn't give up quickly. (17) ____________ after a jar goes spinning off and shatters against the wall does he say: "Stop it, Suzanne! We will have all sorts of trouble with Roberta if you go on (18) ______________ this."

Ti rabjai...

A beküldés Paul érdeme megint. Köszönjük!

Először is a nyersanyag, amivel dolgozunk:

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'.

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP! When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so it is time to shut UP!

Aztán a felhasználási javaslatok:

Pl: often messes things up - creates pandemonium.

There was once a castle which stood in the middle of the forest, surrounded by beautiful gardens. (1) _________ it lived a king and a queen, and one day a baby daughter as lovely as a flower was born to them. They called her Rose.

One night, (2) _________ the queen lay in her bed with the baby asleep in its cot beside her, three fairies appeared, (3) __________ candles in their hands. The queen held her breath in wonder, and watched as a blue-eyed fairy bent over the cot and said:

'You shall be as pretty (4) _______ a rosebud and as good as gold.'
Then a black-eyed fairy gave the baby a different fate:
'Your life will be rosy, (5) __________ short; you will prick your finger on a spindle and die.'
But the third fairy, whose eyes were grey, kissed the child and partly took away the evil curse:
'You will not die, (6) ___________ sleep, until someone comes and finds you (7) ________ the roses.'

The queen thought she must be dreaming, and she wanted to cry out, but the fairies put out their candles and disappeared in the dark. The queen at once ran to tell the king all that (8) ___________ happened. The next day the king gave orders for all spindles and spinning-wheels in the castle to be collected and burnt, hoping to save Princess Rose from the evil fairy's curse.

So the little princess grew bigger and bigger and more and more beautiful every day. She did not learn to spin (9) _________ other girls did, but just played all day long. But one day, when she was fifteen years old, she was playing in the garden with a golden ball, when it rolled into the thicket beside the old tower. When she went to look for it, she found a little door let (10) ________ the tower.

Opening the door, Princess Rose climbed up a flight of winding steps, until she came right to the top of the tower. (11) _________, in a tiny room, a wizened old woman sat beside a spinning-wheel. The princess was fascinated by the spinning-wheel, (12) ___________ having seen one in her life, and she sat down beside the old woman and began to finger it. Before she knew it, she had pricked her finger on the spindle, and in a trice she fell to the ground, fast asleep.

No sooner had the little princess fallen asleep, than everyone and everything in the castle went to sleep too. (13) _________ the rose bushes in the garden went on growing, and they grew and grew until they had overgrown the whole castle.

Time passed, and the princess slept on.

Many a rich prince came in search of the castle, crossing mountains and felling forests, but all in vain. (14) _________ was successful.
Then, one day, a merry young man called Jack was making his way through the forest, singing softly to himself. He was a wandering minstrel, travelling from one castle or great house to, singing for his supper and serving no man, for he had (15) __________ wish to be rich or famous. He had lost his way, when he suddenly smelt the perfume of wild roses.

As he walked towards the briars, quietly singing the old song which told of the sleeping beauty among the thorns, the rose bushes parted to let him through, and arched above him to form a covered walk (16) _________ right up to the castle.

Jack wandered all through the castle, but nothing moved. When he (17) ____________ examined everything, he came at last to the little door in the tower. He ran up the steps and found the wizened old woman sleeping beside her spinning-wheel, while a beautiful young girl slept (18) __________ her feet - Princess Rose.
As Jack gazed at the sleeping princess, he was so struck by her beauty that he (19) __________ stopped breathing. He lifted her towards him, stroked her golden hair, and kissed her lips. At that instant the old woman disappeared in a puff of smoke and the sleeping beauty woke lip. She had scarcely opened her pretty blue eyes, when she took Jack (20) ___________ the hand and said to him:
'Come on, let's go and see Mother and Father,' as if they had known each other all lives.

(21) __________ moment they went out into the garden everything came to life.
The king and queen wept to see their daughter again; then the trumpets sounded, and without delay they celebrated the wedding of Princess Rose and Jack the minstrel.

NLEFYS

Well, the idea is really as simple as it sounds - to provide a Nice List Especially For Your Students. I understand that it may not be as crystal-clear by the very first look at the list (linked in below) as I wish it would be how on Earth will it be nice, but here are some rather interesting questions to be mulled over as an introduction - along with your disturbing feelings that you again stepped into something incomprehensibly crazy. The good news is - you did not.

Anyway, the questions:

Do your students with English penpals know that RSVP is from French?

Do your students with a driver's license know how helpful HOV might be on our roads (in our dreams only, but still)?

Do your Friends fan students know what DOA stands for in the theme song of their favorite series?

Well, if you think they do not, or maybe that it would be a good idea for you to look these up, too, before you answer, this is your list.OK, but how to teach anything like this to some panic-stricken youngsters who can think about nothing but killing you with dull pruning shears when a list like this is presented to them. That, my friend, is a valid question.

First of all, pick some every-day acronyms from the list that you may encounter quite easily (it is not necessarily going to be "DESTA - Digital Ethernet thin-wire STation Adapter", rather DJ, IBM, PC, FBI, FYI, etc...), and ask them if they have seen any of these, and if so, where?

You can also collect a few from different areas (especially for students at intermediate+), such as written communication (ASAP, RSVP, FYI, e.g.), computers (WIFI, HIFI, CD, DVD, PC); then mix them all up, and they have to rearrange the acronyms into groups by categories they think you used - or they will need to explain their different choices.

Good luck, and keep it up! (KIU) :D

Speak English like an American_13

LESSON 13

AMBER COMES OVER TO BAKE COOKIES

Ted's girlfriend Amber comes over to help with the cookies. Amber has experience baking cookies from a former job. Susan leaves the kitchen so they can work better.

Ted: Mom, Amber is here to lend a hand with the cookies.
Susan: Hi Amber. Nice to see you again.
Amber: Good to see you too, Mrs. Johnson.
Susan: That's an interesting hairstyle.*
Amber: Thanks. I'm glad you think it's cool. Blue hair is all the rage this season.
Susan: Well, I'm going to take a break now and let you kids take over.
Ted: Don't worry, Mom. Your business is in good hands with Amber. She really knows her stuff.
Amber: That's true. I used to work at Mrs. Field's Cookies** in the mall.
Susan: You don't work there anymore?
Amber: No, I got fired. I have a real sweet tooth, and they told me I was eating too many cookies.
Susan: Well, I'm sure you haven't lost your touch.
Amber: I might be a bit out of practice.
Ted: Mom, you can watch Amber bake if you want. You might pick up a few tricks of the trade.
Amber: Yes, feel free. As a singer, I'm used to performing before an audience!
Susan: Thanks, but I'm going to get out of the way. You know what they say: too many cooks spoil the broth!
Amber: Will I see you later tonight?
Susan: Yes, I'll be back in a few hours.
Ted: Mom, why don't you just call it a night and go to bed. You've been working your tail off all day.

* When somebody says something is "interesting" it often means they don't like it, but they want to be polite.

** Mrs. Field's Cookies are gourmet cookies that are sold in malls across the United States.

Be prepared!

1) Keep information about you and your family in a handy place, such as on the refrigerator door or in your automobile glove compartment.
2) Keep medical and insurance records up-to-date.

3) Find out if your community is served by an emergency 9-1-1 telephone number. If it is not, look up the numbers for the police, fire department, EMS, and poison control center. Emergency numbers are usually listed in the front of the telephone book. Teach everyone in your home how and when to use these numbers.

4) Keep emergency telephone numbers in a handy place, such as I the telephone or in the first aid kit. Include home and work numbers of family members and friends who can help. Be sure to keep both lists current.

5) Keep a first aid kit handy in your home, automobile, workplace, and recreation area.

6) Make sure your house or apartment number is easy to read. Numerals are easier to read than spelled-out numbers.

7) Learn and practice first aid skills.

8) Wear a medical alert tag if you have a potentially serious medical condition, such as epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease, or allergies.
