The mysterious farmhouse in the mountains
We decided to use the hut as our base and venture out on short trips. (a) _______________________ our first trip we discovered that someone had been through our belongings (although nothing had been stolen.) We then traveled a day's journey farther. Fortunately, we had kept Johann Poberschnigg's curious little book (b) ___________________ we had not forgotten his words: "There are evil powers afoot."
What happened during the second trip in the next few days was-if possible-even stranger: every time we headed westward (c) _____________________ we found a huge, bare mountaintop ahead of us. But when we thought we had found a path that would take us around the side of the mountain we just found ourselves lost in fog or snow that appeared without warning.
Every day, as we set out, we passed a lonely farmhouse far up above the tree line. (d) ________________________, so high up, but we didn't give it any further thought.
We could always see the mountaintop on the other side of the farmhouse. However, as soon as we had walked an hour beyond the farmhouse, (e) ____________________ in the thick fog and we lost our way. In actual fact, there wasn't any real path to follow - it looked as though no one had ever set foot in that area. With the help of our compass we tried every way (f) ___________________ reach our goal, but it was as if the mountain spirits were playing a game with us. We always ended up near the lonely farmhouse again, even though we were sure we had come back by a different route.
