Beszélsz nyelveken? Vajon kinek mi a titka?

LESSON 4

NICOLE'S DAY AT SCHOOL

Nicole tells her mother Susan about her successful presentation at school. Her brother Ted overhears and interrupts the conversation.

Susan: How was your day at school today, Nicole?
Nicole: It was great, Mom. I gave a presentation on Hillary Clinton in government class. Afterwards, my teacher paid me a compliment.
Susan: What did she say?
Nicole: She said my presentation was head and shoulders above the others.
Susan: Way to go!
Nicole: She also said I should go into politics, just like Hillary.
Ted: You're so gung ho about school. It drives me crazy.
Nicole: Ted, don't butt in! You're just jealous.
Ted: Right. You hit the nail on the head. I'm green with envy.
Nicole: Would you just shut up? You're on thin ice with me right now.
Ted: Oh no! Look at me. I'm shaking in my shoes!

First Name, Last Name or Title?

Talking TO People

There are different ways to talk to people depending on your relationship and the situation. Here are the basics of using first name, titles, and other forms in spoken English.

First Name Only
Use the first name in informal and friendly situations. Use first name with your friends, co-workers, acquaintances and fellow students.

Hi, Tom. Do you want to go to a film tonight? - Man to his friend
Excuse me, Mary. What did you think of that presentation yesterday? - Woman to a co-worker in the office
Do you know the answer to number seven, Jack? - Student to another student

If you are speaking with co-workers in the office about work, use a first name. However, if you are speaking to a supervisor or someone you manage, you may have to use a title and last name in more formal situations. The use of first name or title depends on the atmosphere in the office. Traditional businesses (banks, insurance companies, etc.) tend to be more formal. Young companies, such as internet companies, are often very informal.

Ms. Smith, could you come to the meeting this afternoon? - Supervisor speaking to a subordinate at work
Here is the report you asked for Mr. James. - Man to his supervisor

About feelings

A századik poszt: Expressing your feelings

Which of your feelings do you let other people know about? Which do you keep to yourself?
Sometimes it's a good thing to say what you feel. At other times it's better to keep quiet about your feelings. Sometimes it's hard to know exactly what it is you do feel. At other times feelings are so strong they seem to overwhelm you. How often do you express what you feel?

1, Anger

When you feel angry, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?

A. Raising your voice or shouting at the person you're angry with
B. Explaining quietly why you're angry
C. Trying not to be angry (perhaps because you think it's wrong or unfair)
D. Telling yourself you're not really angry or that you've not really got anything to be angry about

2, Feeling sad or upset

When you feel sad or upset, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?

A. Crying about it to someone else
B. Talking to a friend about what's upset you
C. Going away and crying on your own
D. Telling yourself you don't really feel upset or sad or that you don't really have anything to feel upset or sad about

3, Feeling happy

When you are feeling happy, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?

A. Laughing and smiling, telling someone how you feel
B. Analyzing to yourself or others the reasons why you're happy
C. Going around with an inner glow
D. Telling yourself this can't last, it's not really true or it's not right to be happy when others aren't

4, Feeling disgust or dislike

When you feel disgust or dislike, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?

A. Screwing up your face, grimacing as you say what you feel
B. Telling a friend how much you dislike or feel disgust about something or someone
C. Controlling your disgust or dislike
D. Pretending that nothing's happened. Ignoring the things or people that make you feel this way

5, Feeling frightened or worried

When you feel frightened or worried, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?

A. Trembling, shaking or crying as you tell someone how you feel
B. Talking to a friend about the things that are frightening or worrying you
C. Going away on your own and crying about it or feeling bad
D. Telling yourself you don't really feel frightened or worried or that you don't really have anything to feel frightened or worried about

6, Feeling warmth or affection for others

When you feel warmth or affection for others, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?

A. Touching, holding, embracing, kissing other people
B. Talking to a friend about the way you feel
C. Deciding not to express how you feel, perhaps because you're afraid you might get hurt
D. Telling yourself it's sloppy and sentimental to feel like this about people and pushing the feelings away

7, Feeling embarrassed or ashamed

When you feel embarrassed, which of the following reactions would be most typical of you?
A. Laughing in embarrassment as you try to explain to someone why you feel embarrassed or ashamed
B. Telling a friend later about how you felt embarrassed or why you felt so ashamed
C. Swallowing hard and wishing the floor would open so that you could disappear from sight
D. Pretending you're not in the least embarrassed or ashamed and putting an arrogant or cocky face on it

Express feelings directly? A answers: you feel something and you show it.

Talk about them? The B statements show ways in which warm feelings can be partially expressed by talking about them. Talking about your feelings can help you get clear about what you feel. You can get sup- port. You may start to build up the confidence to express feelings more directly.

Keep them to yourself? The C statements are about trying to control your feelings. Sometimes you may feel it's best to keep quiet about what you feel. You may not want to make yourself vulnerable before others. Or you may decide that expressing your feelings would be destructive to someone else. If you always keep your feelings to yourself, however, you may find that they start to come out in other ways.

Deny them? The D statements are about ways of denying your feelings altogether. You may think they're not nice. Or you may be frightened of their strength. Again, these denied feelings may emerge in other ways.

TED'S DAY AT SCHOOL

Ted tells his parents he did poorly on his chemistry test. They tell him he needs to get serious and study more.

Susan: How was your day at school today, Ted?
Ted: Bad. I had a chemistry test, and I blew it!
Susan: Maybe if you didn't cut class so often, you'd do better.
Bob: That's right, son. Stop slacking off and start hitting the books!
Ted: But I can't stand chemistry class. Besides, it's a lost cause. That class is way over my head.
Susan: You need to buckle down.
Ted: When I'm a famous musician, people won't give a hoot about my knowledge of atoms and molecules.
Bob: That's beside the point.
Susan: We know you have your heart set on going to New York University.
Bob: And you don't stand a chance of getting in there with such poor grades!

Toad Action Group

Toad Action Group

The issue: toads, for years now, have been taking giant steps towards extinction. Their crisis point, Langton explains, comes in early spring when they migrate from their winter habitat to the ponds of their choice along predetermined routes, often as ancient as the toads themselves. What fails to penetrate their low, slightly puzzled foreheads is the fact that certain obstacles have arisen during the aeons of their occupation of the earth, most notably the ever-increasing network of roads. Moving slowly and in great numbers, mostly at night and with their golden eyes no more than an inch above the ground the historic migratory stream collides sickeningly with the 20th century.

SAVE THEM! Ummm... or no?

The task: Group up into three - one FOR it, one AGAINST it and one to be the ADCVOCATE (conclusion and final decision).

Ingredients:  pieces of paper to collect ideas, vocab handouts if necessary. These could be about The Environment, Toads, or simply listing useful expressions to introduce and maintain our ideas.

Addendum: Vocab and area(s) to be discussed beforehand

BOB RETURNS HOME WITH BAD NEWS

Bob tells his wife Susan that he lost his job. Susan suggests that he start his own business.
Susan: What's the matter, dear?
Bob: Susan, I got canned today at work.
Susan: But Bob, you were Peter's right-hand man!
Bob: Yes, and he stabbed me in the back.
Susan: Keep your chin up. Maybe he'll change his mind and take you back.
Bob: When pigs fly! Once he makes up his mind, he never changes it. Besides, I told him off.
Susan: Look on the bright side: you won't have to set eyes on Peter ever again.
Bob: Thank goodness for that!
Susan: Hang in there. I'm sure you won't be out of work for long.
Bob: In the meantime, we'll have to live from hand to mouth.
Susan: Don't get too stressed out, Bob. We'll make ends meet.
Bob: I can always get a job at McDonald's as a last resort.
Susan: I don't think they're hiring right now.
Bob: If worse comes to worst, we can sell our home and move into a tent.
Susan: Let's think big! Maybe you can start your own business.
Bob: Easier said than done!
